Cube Elite Race Hardtail Review

10 kilos and a price tag of 3199 €. The Cube Elite C:62 Pro is lightweight and affordable. But this featherweight doesn’t come without its drawbacks. It has narrow tires, a rigid seatpost and a slender suspension fork. Can you still have fun in 2024 with these specs?

The Cube Elite in Review
The Cube Elite Review: Is this race hardtail a true lightweight bargain, or are too many compromises made?

The facts are thrilling. A race hardtail that weighs only 10 kilograms in size L without pedals has become quite rare. And this bike also comes at an affordable price of 3199 €. Yet with the Cube Elite C:62 Pro, it’s worth taking a closer look. The Elite frame hit the market back in 2020 and does show its age.

Cube Elite Race Hardtail
The Cube Elite retails for 3199 € and tips the scales at under 10 kilograms. Those are some pretty solid specs. However, the frame is a bit dated. A flaw that's visible on the bike?
Cube Elite Frame
Riding with style: Minimalism in the frame design is a hallmark of many race-ready hardtails.

Quick Facts on the Cube Elite C:62

  • Models: 5 Models for 2899 €
  • Price: 3199 € (Elite C:62 Pro)
  • Weight: 9.95 kilograms (Elite C:62 Pro)
  • Wheel Size: 29-inch
  • Travel: 100 mm
  • Frame Material: Carbon

Cube Elite Tires
With a width of 2.25 inches, both the front and rear tires are quite narrow. This saves weight but also reduces comfort and traction.

Five Years – A Long Time in the Racing Business

Even though the wheels are already updated to the current Boost spacing, it’s evident that the frame has collected some dust since 2020. While the cable routing is prepared for a dropper post, finding a solid model with a 27.2 mm diameter is quite a challenge in the market. And even if you do find one, wear tends to be higher with the 27.2-mm diameter than with the more standard seatpost diameters of 30.9 or 31.6 mm.

The recently introduced Stereo One models come equipped with a threaded BSA bottom bracket. This makes maintenance much easier.

Cube Elite Bottom Bracket PressFit Standard
Cube opts for the Pressfit standard on the bottom bracket. It's lightweight and straightforward in manufacturing. However, for maintenance, threaded BSA bottom brackets are significantly superior.
Cube Elite Seat Post
The slim 27.2 mm seatpost doesn't rule out retrofitting a dropper post, but it does make it a bit tricky. There are only a few posts out there that come in this size.

Frame Standards of the Cube Elite C:62

  • Axle Standard: Boost (110x15 front / 148x12 rear)
  • Bottom bracket: Pressfit
  • Headset: semi-integrated 1 1/8" top, 1 1/2" bottom
  • Seatpost: 27.2 mm
  • Derailleur: Cube proprietary (NOT UDH!)
  • Frame Sizes: 4 frames from S to XL

The Cube Elite offers amazing value and, thanks to its plethora of lightweight components, it's a true climbing buddy..

Equipment - More Bang for your Buck Isn't Possible

Our consistent evaluation of the components makes it crystal clear: with the Fox Factory fork, the Shimano XT drivetrain and brakes, and the lightweight Newmen wheels, Cube stands well above what one might otherwise expect in the sub 4500 € price range.

The Weight - Lightweight Construction Without Regard for Trends

The component selection shaves weight off the scale. In the C:62 version, the frame is not exactly featherweight at well over 1000 grams. Even with the higher grade C:68 version, which has a greater proportion of fibers to resin, the frame weight remains above 1000 grams.

The benchmark for carbon hardtail frames is currently around 800 grams. For comparison, we’ve listed some weights and prices of bikes that we’ve also tested.

Cube fights for every gram when it comes to tires. With a tire width of 2.25 inches on relatively narrow 25 mm rims, Cube is bucking the trend towards beefy tires in the cross-country scene. The wheelset, including tires, rotors, and cassette, hits the scales at an impressively light 3930 grams, but you’ll also feel a negative impact on the trail.

Competitor models, such as the Canyon Exceed or the Orbea Alma, are now rolling out with thick 2.4-inch tires and wide 30 mm rims. This significantly increases the ride comfort on gravel and off-road terrain.

Here's how the Cube Elite Carbon Hardtail rides

Although the Elite comes fully equipped as a thoroughbred racer, the bike’s seating position is not super stretched out. Thanks to a relatively short top tube and low reach, even touring riders will find this seating position comfortable.

Cube Elite Touring Capabilities
Thoroughbred Racer? Yes. But the Cube is also tour-ready, thanks to its seating position and short reach.
Cube Elite Stem
The stem on the size L frame comes in at 90 mm, which is longer than what competitors typically offer, as they usually opt for a 70 mm stem to achieve a more direct handling.

The Cube´s Uphill Performance

With its lightweight wheels and low overall weight, the bike accelerates like an arrow. Whether it’s climbing, on long straights, or short punchy climbs, the Cube really shines. And even if the geometry, with a 69-degree head angle, isn’t the absolute latest, the handling on the trails is very well executed.

Cube Elite with Shimano XT Brakes
Shimano's XT brakes are reliable partners that also provide ample stopping power for heavier riders.
Cube Elite Steering Limiters
The Acros headset features an integrated steering limiter, which protects the top tube against damage in the event of a crash.

The high seatpost and the narrow tires are real buzzkills on actual trails. When it comes to comfort and enjoyment off-road, there are hardtail concepts, like that of the Rose PDQ, which are significantly more convincing.

Cube Elite Shimano XT Derailleur
With a 1x12 drivetrain, the Shimano XT shifting system is at the cutting edge of technology. It performs well, but doesn't brim with innovation like Srams's Eagle Transmission drivetrains.
Cube Elite Saddle
The saddle from Cube has thoroughly impressed us with its riding comfort.

Conclusion on the Cube Elite Carbon Hardtail

Cube ignites a firework display with the Elite C:62 Pro at an unbeatable price. Anyone looking for a lightweight, propulsion-focused hardtail in the sub-3000 € category must consider the Elite C:62 in their decision.

However, it’s also clear that both the frame standards and the purist layout of the bike with narrow tires, a rigid post, and only 100 mm of travel are not quite cutting-edge anymore. If you’re mostly riding on gravel paths and not looking to hit the trails much, this won’t bother you. In this case, the combination of weight, price, and components is compelling.

The Cube Elite Test
The Cube may come with slightly outdated frame standards and without proper trail setup, but for those seeking a lightweight race hardtail that's also tour-savvy at an unbeatable price, this is the place to be.
